I feel as though at this point I’m lost in the direction I want to take my project, so I decided to go back to this documentary on MCM architecture which reminded me of “form follows function” said by architect, Louis Sullivan.
I took quotes from the documentary which highlighted how “form follows function” was integrated into MCM architecture:
- “A new attitude was developing that the exterior of the building should reflect the function of the interior. The idea of form follows function as a founding principle of modern architecture.” – Wrote by Mark Wilcken, narrated by Chad Bradford.
- “Arkansas native and world-renowned architect Edward Durell Stone, in his design for the Fine Arts Centre. The centre was inspired by the idea of about house and integrated music, fine art and theatre under a single roof. The design reflects the form follows function, credo of the modernists with simple lines and lack of unnecessary ornamentation.” – Wrote by Mark Wilcken, narrated by Chad Bradford.
To me, this seems like a more direct route of what I can focus on for the content of my book. This also can be reinforced in the layouts and composition within the editorial which is also a clearer message.
I now want to explore the style I want to create that reinforces “form follows function” which would include negative space and no unnecessary additions.
